Reclamation Path
The Sentiero della Bonifica is a cycle and pedestrian path that winds through the Valdichiana , in Tuscany, connecting Chiusi to Arezzo . It is about 62 kilometres long and was built following the route of the ancient reclamation canals that, from the Renaissance onwards, were built to drain the marshes of the valley.
The most classic starting point is in Chiusi Scalo , near the train station, where you can find directions and tourist signs. From there the path runs practically entirely on the plain , along canals, cultivated fields, old farmhouses and small villages.
The route is very suggestive , especially for those who love nature and the Tuscan countryside: you will pass by ancient mills, historic hydraulic locks (hence the name "Sentiero della Bonifica") and you will also be able to admire lakes such as Chiusi and Montepulciano . You can often see herons, storks and other species of birds.
It is ideal for both cycling and walking , perhaps in stages if you don't want to tackle it all in one day.
Here is a very simple idea of the route from Lake Chiusi to Chiusi Scalo:
- Start from the southern shore of Lake Chiusi (where the pier and the Pesce d'Oro restaurant are).
- Take the dirt path that runs alongside the Canale Maestro in a north-east direction.
- Continue straight on, following the signs for the Sentiero della Bonifica (brown signs).
- After about 5-6 km , you arrive at Chiusi Scalo , near the train station where many shops await you for your shopping.
